Internal Drainage Board (IDB)

Background of Organisation

An autonomous Statutory Land Drainage Authority as designated under the Land Drainage Act of 1991 & (1994). Board established on 15th November 1942 replacing the Monmouthshire commissioners of sewers which were established in 1884, and the Monmouthshire Court of Sewers in 1531.

Organisational Objectives

To continue to effectively drain the Gwent Levels area which is the 6th most valuable IDB in the country out of some 230 such IDB areas. All IDBs want to be undertaken with due regard to nature conservation, which is particularly important as approx. 55% of the IDB area is SSSI.
