Background of Organisation

The Gordano Society was founded in 1956 as ‘The Portishead Preservation Society’ by like-minded people who were concerned, at the time, with the destruction of some of our historic buildings and their replacement by unsympathetic constructions, all in the name of planning. Since then our scope has widened to incorporate all manner of environmental matters and historical research within the whole of the Gordano area.

Organisational Objectives

• To enrich members’ knowledge and experience of Gordano and its surroundings.
• To express an authoritative and corporate opinion and to stimulate public interest and concern on matters affecting the environment and the quality of life within the area.
• To assist and encourage County, National and other societies having similar aims and interests.
• To pursue the concept of a local heritage centre.
