Background of Organisation

Sedgemoor District Council was formed in 1974 from Burnham-on-Sea Urban District Council; part of Axbridge Rural District Council; Bridgwater Rural District Council and Bridgewater Borough Council. Sedgemoor is one of only a handful of local authorities that is also a Port Authority.

Organisational Objectives

The mission statement of the Council is:

"Working together we will make Sedgemoor a safer, cleaner, more pleasant and vibrant district in which to live, work, invest or visit."

With particular respect to the environment, the District Council endeavours to provide service in a manner that ensures that Sedgemoor’s rural and urban environment is respected in the present and conserved for future generations and promote & protect Sedgemoor’s natural environment as an asset for local communities and visitors. At the same time the Council considers it important to attract sustainable investment to Sedgemoor so that it becomes a prime area for employment,enterprise.The Council works with communities to create regeneration schemes for towns and villages so that they are economically, environmentally and socially vibrant places to live and work.
