Background of Organisation
NFU Cymru has nearly 15,000 members in Wales, and represents the majority of farmers in Wales. Membership of NFU Cymru is entirely voluntary and the Union is self funded. Part of the organisation is run by a team of staff based at two main offices in South and North Wales; Swansea situated in the county of Swansea and Ruthin in the county of Denbighshire. NFU Cymru and NFU Mutual Insurance Group Secretaries are responsible for the service offered to local members within each county. The Welsh Council is the governing body, which supervise the work being carried out by members of staff. The Council meet on a quarterly basis and is headed by the President and Deputy President.
Organisational Objectives
NFU Wales has total independent responsibility for the development of agricultural and rural policy in Wales. It aims :
- to promote the interests of those farming businesses producing high quality food and drink products for customers and markets both at home and abroad;
- to encourage environmentally-friendly and welfare conscious farming practices and a desire to ensure the long term survival of viable rural communities.
