Background of Organisation

Sport England was previously known as the English Sports Council, which began operating under Royal Charter in January 1997. Prior to this, the GB Sports Council had responsibility for the development of sport and the co-ordination of issues such as the operation of doping control services across the UK. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland already had their own Sports Councils.

Organisational Objectives

A NDGO (National Development Government Organisation). Sport England as a Government's Sport development Agency is responsible for providing the strategic lead for sport in England to deliver Government's sporting objectives. The organisation develops the framework for the country's sporting infrastructure and distributes Lottery funding to where it will deliver most value for sport.

· Target resources to schemes which support youth sports through partnerships between schools and sports
bodies or with youth agencies;
· Work to develop performance and excellence in sport, through support to governing bodies of sport;
· Distribute grants from the Lottery fund and provide advice to applicants on sports facility planning, design
and management.
